After his biggest hit, Nandamuri Kalyan Ram is back with another concept film titled Friends. With Kalyan Ram playing a triple role, there's a lot of fuss surrounding the film. Directed by newcomer Rajendra Reddy and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, the film hits screens today. Let's see how it is.
Story: Siddharth (Kalyan Ram), who lives in Hyderabad, is fascinated by the concept of doppelgangers (doubles).He keeps searching for his doubles and to his surprise finds not one but two (Manjunath Hegde and Michael). Soon the three meet and Siddharth enlists the other two's help to get Ishika (Ashika Ranganath) to fall in love with him. When all goes well, Siddharth and Manjunath get to know the unknown side of Michael, which surprises them. Who is this Michael? What's your backstory?What did Siddharth and Manjunath do after learning about Michael? The film has the answers.
Pros: It's all a Kalyan Ram show from start to finish. Kalyan Ram gets the most screen time as he is in almost every frame of the film. Playing a triple role isn't easy, but Kalyan Ram effortlessly coped with the task. It's important for an actor to have variety in roles of this nature, and Kalyan Ram's performance was nothing short of brilliant. Friends is undoubtedly one of Kalyan Ram's finest performances.The actor is ruthless as Michael, innocent as Manjunath and displays subtlety as Siddharth. The movie has some interesting moments and things are a little fast in the second half. A tense atmosphere develops between the antagonist and the family of the protagonist. The scenes that come in this regard are well woven and quite attractive. Enno Ratrulosthayi's song placement is good and provides some much-needed relief in this seriously driven action drama.Ashika Ranganath makes a decent Tollywood debut. She looked beautiful and played well in her limited role. Brahmaji skillfully supports Kalyan Ram and gets a few laughs. Jaya Prakash is decent.
Technical aspects: It's amazing to see this kind of inferior work by Ghibran. More attention should have been paid to the background assessment to increase the impact. Soundar Rajan's cinematography is good, as are the production values. The manufacturers made no compromises when it came to quality. The editing could have been a lot better and the entire first half needed some major fixes.Newcomer director Rajendra Reddy did a good job with the film. He created a fascinating concept and his casting was also perfect. But the writing problems played a spoilsport. What otherwise could have been a very good thriller turned out to be a good movie because of the bad script.
